Our Highly-Trained Staff

Laurie Moore is trained in western acupuncture and is based in our Bishopdale clinic. She holds post-graduate qualifications in acupuncture and uses acupuncture as part of her physiotherapy treatment for general and sports-specific patients.

Most of our other physiotherapist’s from across our clinics are trained in Dry Needling. They hold post graduate qualifications and use it as standalone treatments but more often as part of their physiotherapy treatment for general musculoskeletal and sports-specific patients.

What is acupuncture?

“Acupuncture” refers to the insertion of a fine needle into any part of the human body, but most often inserted into the skin

How does acupuncture work?

Western medical acupuncture is the use of acupuncture following a medical diagnosis. It involves stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles.

This results in the body producing natural substances, such as pain-relieving endorphins. It's likely that these naturally released substances are responsible for the beneficial effects experienced with acupuncture.

At specific points, for disease prevention or therapy. Acupuncture is used in many physiotherapy and GP practices, as well as in most pain clinics and hospices.

A course of acupuncture usually creates longer lasting pain relief than when a single treatment is used.

Acupuncture is a brilliant complement to our other physiotherapy services but it can also be done alone. Via the release of chemicals such as endorphins, melatonin and serotonin it helps the body heal, sleep well, and improves overall well-being.

What is Dry Needling?

Also known as myofascial trigger point dry needling, this technique involves rapid, short term needling to altered or dysfunctional tissues in order to improve or restore function. This may include (but is not limited to), needling of myofascial trigger points, periosteum and connective tissues.  It may be performed with an acupuncture needle or hollow-core hypodermic needles without the injection of a fluid.

Dry needling is an effect treatment to reduce pain, myofascial trigger points and muscle tension.
